Properties of pastels:
◦ Pastel crayons: Hard and very durable
◦ Thinner: Turpentine oil
Hard pastels are preferably used on paper, but can also be applied to any painting surface.
Properties of coal:
◦ Composition: Charring of willow wood
◦ Stroke: Even and soft in deep black
The variations in effect depend on the way the pastel (or charcoal) is held, the pressure applied, the grain and the color of the paper, which give a more or less saturated stroke.
Pébéo Bread Kneading Gum Paste is used to erase pastels and charcoal by absorbing the excess pigments deposited on the sheets.
Pébéo's pastel and charcoal fixative fixes the powdery color of pastels without altering the shade. It is advisable to fix pastels to protect the work of art from time and prevent them from leaving stains when touched, as they never dry completely since they are made of wax and oil.
